Welcome to USM Formula Student!

Every year, University of Strathclyde Motorsport design, build, market and race a single-seat bike-engined racing car as part of the global Formula Student initiative, a series of international competitions focussed on developing engineering talent in a practical, competitive high-octane environment.

The USM team is made up of students from across the University's Engineering and Business faculties who devote their time and energy to ensuring USM continue to compete at a high level both on the racetrack and off.

We would like to take the time to thank all of our partners and sponsors for their continued support - without them there would be no USM, and we are extremely grateful for the opportunity they have given us.

Business Plan Competition

  • Business Plan Competition

USM are delighted to announce our first ever Business Plan Competition in association with team sponsor and consultancy firm Accenture. Open to all Strathclyde students, participants are invited to attend an initial Presentation Skills Session hosted by Accenture on Tuesday 28th Feb in MC319.

Following the initial session, teams of students will be given three weeks to prepare a comprehensive business case for the volume production of a Formula Student car such as USM11, and given ten minutes to deliver their presentation to a panel of judges including representatives from Accenture and the University of Strathclyde's Business School.

With a prize of £100 available to the winning team, we hope this event will serve to generate interest in and awareness of the business side of the Formula Student competition.

James Weir Fire

  • As you may have heard, a serious fire on the third floor of the Engineering building on Tuesday 7th Feb has caused significant fire, smoke and water damage to various parts of the building. Whilst we hope there has been no major damage to the Formula Student workshop or equipment, the building is currently closed and it may be some time before the team are able to gain access.

Although this has thrown a fairly large spanner in the works, the team are determined to continue the build of our 2012 car somewhere and somehow, and have already made plans for relocation, set to start the minute we are granted access to the building.

    We'll see you at Silverstone!

USM12 Build

  • BarnshawsLasered ComponentsThanks to sponsors Lasered Components and Barnshaws, the chassis of our 2012 car is quickly taking shape! With both front and main hoops in place and welded, work is underway to construct the front half of the car, while the geometry of the rear end is finalised and chassis jigs finalised.

One of the team's major aims for the 2012 season is an ambitious set of early build targets, allowing us to spend more time testing and developing the car (and drivers!) on track prior to the summer's competitions.

FSUK2012 Registration

  • Formula StudentOnce again, USM will be making the trip to Silverstone this July to compete in the IMechE's Formula Student competition. With a score to settle following last year's engine issues and new competition from the electric and alternative powertrain vehicles joining the party, the week is guaranteed to be highly competitive, and we look forward to putting USM12 through its paces.

FSG2012 Registration

  • Formula Student GermanyAfter blazing through the registration quiz in just 1min 23sec, USM became the second fastest team in the world to register for a place at Formula Student Germany 2012. This year's event looks to be as incredible as ever, and the team will head to Hockenheim determined to display the USM's true potential following FSG2011's 100m heartbreak.
